Streetscape Demonstration Project Launches!

Fill out our online survey here!

Walk down Liberty Avenue in October and you might encounter some new neighbors – two sets of benches and planters installed in the block from Edmond Street to State Way. Temporarily installed by Bloomfield Development Corporation with support from Neighborhood Allies, the project’s goal is to provide community members with an opportunity to give feedback on what kind of planters and benches they would like in the neighborhood. We’re collecting input through online surveys, paper surveys at the benches and at the Bloomfield Saturday Market.

Bloomfield Demonstration Project

Two sets of benches and planters are scheduled to be installed for two-week periods beginning on September 30.  The set installed on September 30 includes two wood benches, one with a back and one backless, and a matching wood planter. The second set installed on October 15 and to be removed on October 29, presents black metal benches with fiberglass planters.  The items displayed were selected from an extensive number of products by a committee of urban designers and planners, community members, and architects, working closely with and receiving input from Department of City planning, Art Commission, and Department of Public Works.

The Bloomfield Neighborhood Vision Plan identified our business district as key to our community character and an enhanced streetscape as important for supporting the business district, residents, and visitors. The project committee, with assistance from Michael Baker International, will deploy multiple methods to gather feedback including on-site conversations, paper surveys, and an electronic survey in an effort to maximize community input and ensure that anyone wishing to participate has a voice in the project.

Once community feedback is gathered, the Project Committee will finalize the selection, complete an implementation plan, and submit the final plan for review by the Art Commission. Benches and planters will be installed throughout the business district in phases, working with business and property owners on locations.
